Licensing update July 2023

Updates to the Product Terms

For this month we have a short licensing update. Microsoft stated a few updates in the Product Terms, namely to:

  1. Azure Virtual Desktop
  2. GitHub
  3. Microsoft 365
  4. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
  5. Power Platform
  6. Windows 365 Frontline
  7. Azure Support

1. Azure Virtual Desktop

Windows G3/G5 (government SKUs) are now eligible for Azure Virtual Desktop. If you have one of these licenses you are now eligible to access Azure Virtual Desktop virtual machines.

2. GitHub

Certain offerings in the GitHub portfolio are now available as an Azure Service, meaning they will have a metered option available and will be counted towards your Azure consumption (and invoice) instead of a subscription license. See below entry:

3. Microsoft 365 changes

New Product entry: Entra ID Governance – a new product from Microsoft to automatically ensure that the right people have the right access to the right apps and services at the right time. This is the latest product to the Entra product family (which builds on Azure AD Premium) and as such is an Add-on to Azure Active Directory Premium (P1 or P2). You can learn more here.

Additional product: Microsoft Defender Vulnerability Management Add-On to Defender for Endpoint for Servers – same product which we covered in a previous edition, but now available as an Add-On to Defender for Endpoint for Servers.

Updated product: Viva Glint – previously Glint LinkedIn, but now called Viva Glint . This license requires any M365 plan (including business edition) or any O365 plan as a base license. Glint does not seem to be covered under the general Microsoft terms and conditions, as (an updated) set of terms and conditions was released specifically for Glint. Most notable:

  • Viva Glint includes an Online Services component and a Supplemental Professional Services. The latter requires Microsoft to store, process and access this Professional Services data.
  • Purchase of Viva Glint entitles Qualified Customers to give Eligible Users access to Legacy Glint Services (ie. Glint LinkedIn) during the Entitlement Term. These are not covered by the Microsoft T&Cs but rather by the LinkedIn order forms formerly used to by these products under.

4. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint for Servers AND Microsoft Defender Experts: now also available under Microsoft Customer Agreement.

5. Power Platform

Regarding Power Platform, Power Automate Process Mining was added to the Product Terms. This requires a Power Automate per user with Attended RPA license as a prerequisite. Process Mining is a new addition to the platform that is supposed to help you discover inefficiencies across your organization.

6. Windows 365 Frontline

Microsoft announced Windows 365 Frontline back in April 2023 and it is now included in the Windows 365 family. Windows 365 Frontline is the option to deliver Cloud PCs to part-time and shift workers (so similarly to M365 Frontline).

Prerequisites: Windows 10/11 Enterprise/Education license, Intune license and Azure AD Premium P1/P2. With Windows 365 Frontline, you have the option to provision up to three Cloud PCs, though only one can be active at a time per license.

7. Azure Support

Clarification on Azure Support, namely that it is reduction eligible. This means you are able to scale down the amount of Azure Support (Pro or Standard) licenses upon the anniversary of your Enterprise Agreement contract (includes SCE).

We hope you found this month’s licensing update useful. As always, if you have any questions or remarks, do get in touch at info@licenseq.com.
